Flat Base This term applies to the type of platform or base that a model Steam engine is mounted on. it can obviously mean any make of engine, but when applied to Mamod models it refers to models produced before 1947. They are more desirable because of their rarity and are generally considered to be of better quality construction than the later models. A press form or raised base is now commonly used, this is more rigid and a thinner gauge of steel can be used.
