Signalling Equipment Ltd

Signaling Equipment Ltd was a subsidiary of J. and L. Randall Ltd, toy and game manufacturers of Potters Bar. In 1946 they introduced a range of four stationary engines under the S.E.L. trademark.

The company also made electrical toys. including miniature electric motors and dynamos.

The four engines, which with little change were sold for nearly twenty years before being abandoned in 1965. were cataloged as follows:

No 1520 Minor
No 1530 Junior
No 1340 Standard
No 1550 Major

They all used small oscillating Cylinder engines, the Major had twin Cylinder s and a Whistle .

In 1948 a SEL ection of accessories was added including a circular saw, grinder and a fan - all with black plastic bodies. They were designed to be driven by the range which were rather low power engines.

Signalling Equipment Ltd was one of the firms which made an attempt to die-cast engines from zinc based alloys. They made a small launch engine (but not a Boiler ) by this process. It was sold for home boat-builders and was also used by other manufacturers as a power unit.

Not much more is known about SEL appart from that they also owned and used the trade name Merit . You will often find the same model of Steam engine sold under both trade names
